Edit: OMG!!! I'm looking at this on the schools computer, and the colors have just been slaughtered!!!! This makes me really super sad! I hope it looks alright on your computers!

Woohoo! I have been working on this for the last few weeks, when I'm not doing homework, and I finally have finished it! Oh and OMGWFTBBQ its not anime/manga style D8 . Let me know what you think?

This is Eva, my OC for the tabletop RPG Exalted. She is a Sidereal, one of the joy-bringers. Part of the Gold-faction (or she is going to be soon). She has been to much fun for me lately. If you know the Exalted world. I just find it so great to be able to go look up random stuff in heaven!

I used this picture as a reference:

Hrm. There are things that I like about this piece, and things that I hate about it. Let's dive right in to the critique, shall we?

For starters, it's cool that you're using a ref like this. Refs are great for learning poses, shading, and so forth. You seem to have gotten the pose pretty much down (human faces are a b*tch, so I won't nitpick too much about anatomy).

It's interesting how, VS your ref, you flipped the contrasting clothes with the contrasting hair; in the ref, the model's shirt stands out against the black BG, while in yours, her hair stands out, and vice-versa. You have a nice progression here from indigo to blue-green to icy cyan and white. If only this nice gradient had persisted in other aspects of the image, such as your shading.

The shading is your main issue. It just does not stand out enough. The lights do not feel light enough; the darks, not dark enough. This gives the image a flat feeling overall.

Eva's hair in particular looked all white to me at first. White can be very hard to shade; experiment with varying degrees of darkness. As-is, you seem to be sticking with white and cyan, with just a little bit of gray up top. Mid-tones are what make that reference awesome; we see black, hints of brown, a dark gray, and a light gray. Experiment with mid-tones. It might also make the image look better on other computers.

So! Stars and reasons:

Vision/Originality: OK, it's an original character drawn with a ref. I don't know much else about her, so I am unsure of how to rate this.

Technique: As usual, this is what I hammer hardest on. Be careful of how you use the burn/dodge tools in PhotoShop; they can be good friends, but abusing them makes things look tacky. Play with the exposure of the tools if you feel you must use them. Do not be afraid to use other colors to shade. Remember, traditional artists have little else to work with. Your lineart is fine as far as I am concerned; I am not a genius when it comes to human anatomy. The overall flatness still does not quite cut it for me.

Impact: Again...the tame shading makes this picture lack UMPH, but the hair stands right out. It's also interesting to see how it contrasts with your ref.

Overall: B-. Not bad, but I can see why some computers have trouble showing the shading and/or colors properly. You seem afraid to use midtones. Keep at it! Experiment! Most importantly, have fun!

Hope this helped! :D

The colors are nice, and you got the pose pretty well, but you should focus on getting your lines to come out cleaner.
